7 Tips for Kid Raising

Lambing season is a busy time for any goat farmer, whether it is already in full swing or just about to start. It’s a hectic period where even small improvements can make a big difference.

Colostrum

  • The evidence is in the measurement; The quality of colostrum plays a crucial role. Always check colostrum with a refractometer before feeding. This provides an indication of the IgG content in the colostrum. Additionally, ensure that colostrum is collected hygienically and kept fresh to prevent bacterial growth.
  • Reheat effectively; Avoid leaving colostrum out of the fridge for too long. Warm up small portions using a sous-vide stick, which maintains a constant water temperature, keeping proteins intact and ensuring colostrum stays at the right temperature.

Hygiene
  • Create a controlled access area; Establish a clear separation between clean and dirty areas with a controlled access area. This can be done simply with a bench or another object. Use different coloured boots and coveralls to distinguish between kids and adult animals. Bright colours help keep things organized and add some vibrancy.
  • Protection; Protect both yourself and the kids by wearing gloves and boot covers.
  • Disinfect navels and ear tags; To minimize the risk of infections, proper disinfection of navels and ear tags is essential. Use iodine tincture (preferably 10%) for optimal protection and quick drying of the navel. This combination of iodine and alcohol is highly effective against pathogens.
  • Cleaning and replacing materials; Keep materials clean by cleaning with warm water and a cleaning agent. Think of colostrum bottles, feeding tubes, teats, and other tools. No time to clean immediately? Work with two sets and place one in a bucket with cleaning solution daily. Discard worn-out drinking materials at the end of the season to prevent future issues.

Dryness and Comfort
  • Bedding and lime; A dry environment is essential for healthy conditions. Use ample bedding and choose lime with high absorbency to quickly soak up moisture, ensuring a clean and comfortable space for your kids.
