Fresh doelings represent the next generation of dairy goats that will make a difference on your farm every year. In the last few years, the genetic potential of dairy goats has seen remarkable advancements. However, to fully leverage these genetic qualities, it is crucial to tailor their diet to meet their specific needs.
A Rapid Start is is a must
Doelings that are better developed and have a higher pre-kidding weight can immediately produce more milk than less-developed doelings. We observe significant variations between farms in this regard. Growth during the juvenile phase can only be utilized once. To ensure top performance, a smooth raising period from kid to doeling is essential. The final months of this raising period are especially decisive for the animals' start after kidding. In practice, we often see a focus on breeding weight, but pre-kidding weight is even more important!
Focus on Feed Intake
Analysis of data from our VitalMonitor reveals a clear correlation between feed intake and the production of grams of butterfat and protein. On farm, we see significant differences in dry matter intake, both in the weeks before kidding and during the first months of lactation. A ration may have perfect final values, but if animals consume too little of it, they will lose weight. This weight loss results in insufficient milk production because part of the feed is redirected toward growth rather than milk.
To prevent this, it’s essential to provide increased nutritional support to pregnant doelings as soon as their pregnancy is confirmed. The ration must meet the nutritional needs of these pregnant animals, with a strong focus on maximizing feed intake. During the final months of raising, these new dairy goats must be trained to process as much feed as possible.
Successful Kidding
Before kidding, we aim for pregnant doelings to achieve a daily dry matter intake of 2 kilograms per animal. Higher feed intake around kidding results in healthier goats with stronger immunity, enabling them to kid and start lactating more easily. Using our VitalMonitor, we closely track this feed intake.
At Vitalvé, we have gained extensive experience and conducted practical trials in recent years to optimize feed intake for young animals. Our goal is to ensure that doelings reach their fullest potential within the first phase after kidding. Curious about how we achieve this? Contact our team for more information!
